Zoro was born in East Blue. Like Luffy he was strong enough to defeat most adult, he is undefeated in his town. And one day, he came to a dojo in Shimotsuki village to challenge with all member ( a arrogant boy but Koshiro_ the Master just laugh and accept his challenge), he said " If i win, i'll take the signboard of this dojo" and if not, he will join that dojo. But as you've known, Not only have no change to match with the master, but also defeated by Kuina_ Master's daughter (just one hit). This failure make Zoro know that, he's not realy strong like he think ( Be defeat by a female). And from that day, he join the dojo, trained very hard with the ambition " someday he'll strong enough to defeat Kuina". He tried to train himself to use professionally " Santoryu" (the capacity to use 3 sword at the same time).
In his past, he was defeated by Kuina 2001 total times. The last they challenged with real sword. And at that time, Zoro and Kuina promised each other that someday, one of them will become the greatest sword man in the world. But unfortunately Kuina died young, so sad for Zoro, she was the greatest opponent and the greatest friend of him, they know each other and have the same ambition must be accomplish. After Kuina dead, Zoro kept training himself harder than before to fulfill their promise, enhance his skills and increase his stamina. Zoro required the Master (Koshiro) to grant him "Wando Ichimonji" (Kuina' sword) with the significance that it'll remind him about the promise and he want Kuina beside with him on the way he fulfill their ambition.
